It is tempting to think more is more here. It usually is not. The aim is never to add as much as possible — it is to choose the handful of pieces that make you feel beautifully, unmistakably like yourself.

Everything else follows from the gown, not the other way round. Think about its neckline, fabric, detail and overall feel before you choose anything to go with it. A heavily embellished dress may need very little else at all — the beading and lace are already doing the work. Once alterations begin, bring your actual wedding shoes, or a pair with exactly the same heel height, to every fitting. It affects the hem more than people expect.
Underwear, Shapewear and the Pieces Nobody Sees
Many wedding gowns already have real structure and support built into the bodice, so special underwear is not always necessary. If you do plan to wear shapewear or a particular bra, take it to your fittings so your seamstress can see exactly how the dress sits over it. This is a detail worth getting right early, since it can change how the whole bodice fits.
Belts, Sleeves and Detachable Pieces
A belt, a detachable sleeve, an overskirt or a jacket can genuinely change the personality of a gown — sometimes giving you two distinct looks across one day, from ceremony to dancing. If your dress includes pieces like these, know exactly how they fasten before the day itself, and keep them stored safely with the gown in the meantime.
Keeping the Balance
Once everything is together, stand back and look at the whole picture rather than each piece in isolation. If your eye goes straight to the accessories rather than to you, it is probably too much. The best finishing touches make the dress, and the bride, look even better — they do not compete for attention.
By your final fitting, try to have your shoes, veil, underwear and any important accessories with you, all together, so you can see the complete look with time to make changes if something is not quite right. There should be no surprises on the morning itself.
