Most designers need four to six months to make a made-to-order gown, and alterations with a seamstress we recommend add roughly eight weeks on top. When you understand the stages, the whole thing becomes something to look forward to rather than a deadline to panic about.
18 to 24 months before: the inspiration stage
If your wedding is still a year and a half or more away, you are in the loveliest part — where nothing is urgent and everything is possibility. Browse. Pin images that catch your eye. Save anything that makes your heart beat a little faster without worrying too much about why. You do not need to know your style yet; in fact it is better if you do not assume too much, because brides are famously good at falling in love with dresses they never imagined they would like. This is also a good time to think about budget. We stock dresses from around £400 to £3,780, and knowing your rough range helps your stylist guide you to the right part of the collection.
12 to 18 months before: start booking appointments
This is when research becomes action. Book one or two boutiques to begin with rather than trying to visit every shop in Essex in a weekend — that tends to produce dress fatigue and confusion rather than clarity. Your appointment with us is ninety minutes, there is no charge, and you can bring up to four guests. Your stylist will spend real time getting to know you before pulling a single dress. 8 to 12 months before: the ideal ordering window
This is your golden window. Order now and you are working with exactly the breathing room that makes everything feel manageable. A word on sizing: bridal sizing works differently from the high street, and your measurements determine the size to order rather than what you normally wear. A dress can be taken in up to three sizes but only let out by around one, so starting with the right measurement matters. If you would like to spread the cost, we offer flexible payment plans — a 25/25/50 split across production, or an interest-free monthly plan with a small admin fee — and your dress is fully insured while it is on our premises.
6 to 8 months before: measurements and confirmation
If your order is in and production is underway, this is a calm period. Some designers carry out a measurements call during production, and we manage all of that on your behalf. It is also a good time to think about accessories — veil, jewellery, shoes — so that when your dress arrives you can try everything together.
4 to 6 months before: your dress arrives
This is one of the phone calls our brides consistently describe as one of the best of the whole process. Your dress is in. Your first fitting with the seamstress we recommend is not just practical — it is the first time you see the finished dress in front of you. We only ever recommend people who are meticulous, experienced, and genuinely wonderful to work with.
2 to 4 months before, and the final fitting
Over the following weeks your seamstress works through the alterations in stages — taking in here, adjusting the length there, adding a bustle if you want one. This stage takes patience and it is worth giving it the time it needs. Your final fitting is when it all comes together: the dress is finished, it fits you, and the wedding suddenly feels beautifully real. Then you take it home, and on the day someone does up the buttons or ties the laces, you look in the mirror, and you are ready.
